Chlamydial infections in animals

Chlamydophila felis : typing

Sero-epidemiological studies indicate some variability among C. felis strains  (Pudjiatmoko et al., 1996). Nevertheless, C. felis strains show a substantial degree of rRNA and ompA gene conservation and belong to a distinct serotype (Andersen, 1991; Pudjiatmoko et al., 1997a; Sayada et al., 1994). The 16S rRNA genes of C. felis strains that have been sequenced to date differed by <0.6% (Everett et al., 1999). However, heterogeneity of feline strains related to geographical origin was demonstrated by RFLP analyses of groEL and ompA genes (Fukushi and Hirai, 1994). Random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis revealed at least 2 different genetic fingerprints among the six C. felis strains examined (Pudjiatmoko et al., 1997b). C. felis and C. caviae strains were clearly distinguished from C. psittaci and C. abortus strains.  Two of the recognised C. felis feline pneumonitis strains, i.e. FP Pring and FP Cello, have an extrachromosomal plasmid which was not found in the FP Baker strain (May et al., 1996). The type strain for the species C. felis is FP Baker (ATCC VR120).
