    For safer sex:

  • Always use a condom for penetrative sex. This is particularly important with a new partner whom you do not yet know well. Make sure the condoms you buy meet some sort of national or international standard for reliability. Getting used to putting one on may take a bit of practice, but once you've got used to it you may find that condoms are not the "passion killers" they are reputed to be. These days there are all sorts of fun condoms. Preferably use condoms containing sperm killing agents like nonoxynol-9 ®. They help protect against the germs that cause STI as well as helping prevent pregnancy. Make sure, though, that you read and comply with the instructions on the packet.
  • Enjoy sex without penetration - by kissing, masturbation, using your fingers, stroking and sensual massage.
  • By all means use fun sex toys like dildos or a vibrator. However, don't share them with one another unless they are protected with a condom, and always clean them carefully afterwards.
  • Anal sex is best avoided because there is a relatively high risk of infection and of breaking a condom. If you do both want anal sex, make sure you buy a thicker "ultra-safe" type condom which is less likely to break. Durex "Ultra-strong" or Mates "Super strong" are examples. These days it is possible to buy ultra-strong, non rubber condoms which are also less allergenic.
  • Don't use petroleum jelly based lubricants like Vaseline. They rot rubber condoms 1 - V.Poor .  Use a proper vaginal jelly or other water-based lubricant.
